This was a hedge planted maybe 20 years ago in a curve around a pond. By laying the hedge we hope to have created the best possible habitat for wildlife to flourish, as well as opening up an area where the people of the company Carpenter Oak can relax and enjoy the space after work. As always we look forward to seeing the seed bank make a show of wild flowers with the higher light levels. Hedgelaying really appeals to me in its unification of traditional management techniques and the craft and skill levels therein, and the fact that it is the best woodland management practice for most hedgerows because of its positive impact on the flora and fauna of Devon. The dense woven hedge which will grow up will now provide ideal bird nesting habitat and feeding grounds, nesting and travel paths for hedgehogs and other mammals. If the hedge is laid again in 8/10 years time then this will provide a source of firewood, create varying conditions for different species of wildlife to thrive in, and be kept looking its best in this beautiful part of South Devon
