When a tree is cut down, for whatever reason, it seems respectful to make the best use of the timber. Sometimes the best use of the tree is to become deadwood on the woodland floor as fuel for the ecosystem, creating conditions for nature to flourish. When we at SDWM dismantled and felled this Leylandii, the woodland owner Dan wanted to make planks for his building business. Extracting the 15 metre straight trunk looked problematic, which is where our Alaskan chainsaw mill came in. Able to cut on any incline, this was the tool for the job. A ladder is used to cut a flat on top of the log, and then the mill can cut the planks using this plane as a guide.
